Above-ground pools are easier to maintain than in-ground pools — smaller volume, simpler plumbing — but they have their own quirks: vinyl liners that scratch, lighter filtration systems, and walls that flex. Here's how to keep one clean without damaging it.
Use Liner-Safe Tools Only
Most above-ground pools have vinyl liners, and a wire-bristle brush or a sharp-edged vacuum head can scratch or even puncture them. Stick to nylon-bristle brushes and vacuum heads with smooth, rounded contact points. The Weekly Rhythm

Watch Your Filter's Limits
Above-ground filtration systems are typically smaller and less powerful than in-ground setups, so they depend more on you. Empty the pump basket frequently, rinse or backwash the filter when pressure climbs, and run the pump at least 8–12 hours a day in summer heat. If the water turns hazy, the filter almost always needs attention before the chemicals do.
Mind the Waterline
Vinyl liners collect a ring of body oils, sunscreen, and dust at the waterline. Brush it weekly with a soft brush — gently, since the liner is thinnest where sun exposure is highest. Avoid abrasive scrubbers and harsh household cleaners, which can bleach or degrade the vinyl.
